Perinatal Infant Mental Health Support
What is Perinatal & Infant Mental Health?
Perinatal and infant mental health refers to the emotional wellbeing of parents and caregivers from pregnancy through the first years of a child’s life, as well as the early emotional development of infants. This period can bring joy and connection, but it can also involve stress, anxiety, low mood, grief, trauma, or feeling overwhelmed. Experiences such as fertility challenges, IVF, pregnancy loss, complicated births, or adjusting to parenthood can all impact mental health during this time.
Why Is Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Important?
Mental health during the perinatal period plays a key role in the wellbeing of both parents and babies. How a caregiver is feeling emotionally can affect bonding, confidence in parenting, relationships, and overall family wellbeing. Early support can reduce distress, prevent problems from becoming more severe, and help families feel more supported, understood, and connected during a time of major change.
How Can a Psychologist Help During This Time?
A psychologist can provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental space to talk about what you’re experiencing. Support may include help with anxiety, depression, stress, birth trauma, fertility challenges, grief and loss, or adjusting to parenthood. Psychologists can also support emotional regulation, coping strategies, identity changes, and strengthening the parent–infant relationship. Support can be tailored to your needs and offered in flexible formats, including telehealth sessions.
What Is Non-Directive Counselling for Pregnancy Support?
Non-directive counselling is a supportive approach that focuses on listening, understanding, and exploring your experiences without judgement or pressure. During pregnancy support counselling, this means the psychologist does not tell you what to do or push you toward any particular decision. Instead, they provide a safe space to talk through your thoughts, feelings, values, and options at your own pace. This approach is especially helpful when navigating complex or emotionally challenging situations, allowing you to feel heard, respected, and supported in making choices that are right for you. At Stonebrook Psychology, our psychologists offer this support
